Vu Nhat Tan presents two collaborative shows to kick off February.

Due to a convergence of several disparate factors, I missed two great-sounding shows last weekend. First was Vu Nhat Tan’s monthly night at CAMA ATK on Thursday, this time in collaboration with percussionist Tran Xuan Hoa. I haven’t been able to make it to Tan’s ATK night since November, something I hope to correct next month.

Vu Nhat Tan and Trinh Mien Hien at Chula. Apologies to Hanoi Grapevine for the blatant photo thievery.

On Friday evening Vu Nhat Tan also performed with violinist Trinh Mien Hien at Chula. I was completely unaware that A) this event was even happening and B) Chula even hosted live music events, especially of the experimental variety. (It also didn’t help that I was at an early Tết party that evening.) I’ve gotta keep my eyes and ears closer to the ground.

Thankfully, Hanoi Grapevine’s KVT wrote a descriptive and detailed column about the performance that captures the intricacies and nuances of the collaboration. It’s well worth a read and hints at the sounds and music created last Friday.

Here’s hoping this duo repeats this collaboration in the not-too-distant future.
