Electro Acoustic Cải Lương at CAMA-ATK this Thursday. And later…SILENCE. + Zeni Geva round-up.

Gigs! Shows! Events! Past, present and future.

Lương Huệ Trinh twists and stretches Cải Lương with friends at CAMA-ATK on Thursday evening. Definitely a show to check out (details below). Really excited for SILENCE at the end of the month at HRC brought to you by The Onion Cellar…thinking it will be a nice meditative respite from everything going on outside the silence. (I’m really hoping that stereotypical jackass who yells “Play some Bon Jovi!” at these sorts of events doesn’t show up.)

Finally, jump down past the upcoming event info below to find some images, sights/sounds and words about the Zeni Geva show come and gone. And now, due to a scarcity of time, I will include the relevant info from the relevant points of information provided by the relevant peoples (which can be found here and here, respectively).

Two of Vietnam’s most promising young musicians, Lương Huệ Trinh and  Nguyễn Thùy Dung, have teamed up with Đào Văn Trung for a reworking of Cải Lương.

Not the cheeriest genre at the best of times, Cải Lương – a blend of folk and classical used in theatre – is about to be dragged through the dark innards of modern electronic music by Lương Huệ Trinh. The young contemporary musician has ably lent her moody soundscapes to The Onion Cellar’s Musik to Play in the Dark and tracks like Black Circle and Black Moon cement the running theme of her delicately arranged electro acoustic compositions.

Joining Trinh will be award-winning violinist Đào Văn Trung and đàn tranh player Nguyễn Thùy Dung. Trung will give a rendition of his Cai Luong inspired composition Hồn Việt (Vietnamese Soul). Adding colour to everything will is the ever-excellent Nguyễn Thùy Dung who brought Contemporary Ca Trù to ATK last month.

Together they’ll be condensing Cai Luong’s theatrical history into their modern interpretation of the genre to bring the audience a score that reflects the highs and lows of their personal stories.

If you liked Contemporary Ca Trù, you’re in for a treat.

THE ONION CELLAR GIỚI THIỆU MỘT CHƯƠNG TRÌNH MÀ Ở ĐÓ, BẠN ĐƯỢC THỬ THÁCH KHÔNG NÓI MỘT TỪ NÀO. ĐỂ HÒA HỢP CÙNG SỰ IM LẶNG.

Chúng tôi nói:

SILENCE TEACHES YOU HOW TO SING
29/8/13 – Hanoi Rock City

với:

NO.1 của CHRISTINA VANTZOU : chiếu phim

ZENI GEVA + KK NULL + RUINS ALONE AT HRC REVISITED.

By all accounts and reports, the Zeni Geva show last month at Hanoi Rock City lived up to it’s not-to-miss status. (I missed it…ugh.) Vu Nhat Tan has published a comprehensive review of the show (in English here and in Vietnamese here) over at Hanoi Grapevine. Check it out. Also check out these video excerpts taken by Mathias Rossignol (thanks Mathias!)
